Cat health question: How can spraying aerosol spray in a cats face affect the cat?

On Easter Sunday my Grandma sprayed febreeze directly into the cat’s face. The next day he was showing signs of illness. Today he was admitted into the animal hospital for liver problems. The cat is 9 years old.
Could it have been the spray or just coincendental?

I personally would never, but I saw a woman at the park today doing it to her dog. I know that dogs are not humans, but it would piss me off if I were to be sprayed in the face every time someone though I was out of line. So is it wrong or right?
